Competición
About This Machine
Competición was manufactured by Petaco, S.A. (formally Procedimientos Electromagnéticos de Tanteo y Color) of Madrid, Spain, between 1962 and 1977. A single-player electro-mechanical machine, it carries a soccer/futbol theme, reflecting the sport's popularity in its home market. It should not be confused with Petaco's separate title, "Competición Penalty."
The game is built around two flippers, five pop bumpers, and two slingshots, along with drop lanes positioned in the upper left and right of the playfield. Notably, Competición has no kick-out holes. Its cabinet features a drop-down design to accommodate a separate coin box access door below the main coin door, along with metal rails fitted with cigarette holders and wood legs — details characteristic of the era's cabinet construction.
Little is documented about Competición's specific release date, designer, or production numbers, leaving much of its history to speculation. Still, as a rare soccer-themed EM machine from a Spanish manufacturer, it offers an interesting look at pinball design outside the dominant American and European markets of the 1960s and 70s.
