Far Out

Far Out is a rare electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine from Maquinas Recreativas Sociedad Anonima (Maresa), a Spanish manufacturer based in Madrid. It is a localized version of Gottlieb's 1974 four-player 'Far Out,' distinguished by drop targets featuring a rocket design instead of the original's checkered flag. As such, it dates to the mid-1970s and carries the same psychedelic theme as its Gottlieb counterpart.

The gameplay on Far Out features two flippers and three pop bumpers, with additional challenges provided by two slingshots, two 5-bank drop targets, two standup targets, and a star rollover mechanism. The machine also boasts an end-of-ball bonus feature. A right ball return gate and left outlane ball kicker add to the challenge, requiring precise timing and strategy from players.

The design and art on Far Out reflect its psychedelic theme, in keeping with the Gottlieb original it was adapted from. The machine's wedge-head, drop-down cabinet is typical of Gottlieb designs of the period. While little is documented about Maresa's own production details, Far Out's blend of gameplay mechanics and countercultural aesthetic make it a notable find for pinball enthusiasts, particularly as an example of a Spanish-market adaptation of an American design.
