About This Machine

This Carnival Pinball Game listing represents a category of small, unbranded pinball machines historically found at carnivals and fairs rather than a single specific model. Typically, twenty or more such machines were lined up in a row, each individually numbered, and unlike standard pinball machines they accepted no coins directly from players.

Instead, a carnival attendant took payment from each player, who chose one of the numbered machines to compete in a race against the other players. Competitors shot balls repeatedly and quickly to advance their numbered horse, dog, or other token on a scoreboard mounted behind the attendant. The winner received a prize directly from the attendant, or tickets redeemable for a prize -- making this a redemption game rather than a standard competitive pinball machine.

As an electro-mechanical, single-player game, this style of carnival pinball predates solid-state technology. A more elaborate, individually named example of this game type is 'Original Flipper', and other variants let players compete to complete bingo cards instead of racing tokens. Because these games were unbranded and mass-produced for carnival circuits, their manufacturer and design history remain undocumented.
