The Crocodile Hunter Outback Adventure
About This Machine
The Crocodile Hunter Outback Adventure is a solid state electronic pinball machine that was designed by The Pinball Factory of Murrumbeena, Australia, to be manufactured under license from Bally with an adventure theme built around Steve Irwin's 'Crocodile Hunter' persona. Crucially, the game was never actually produced: with the untimely death of Steve Irwin, the licensing arrangement collapsed before manufacturing could begin.
According to Wayne Gillard, Managing Director of The Pinball Factory, parts had been ordered for 25 prototype games, but ultimately only two whitewoods were built – a sample cabinet and a production cabinet, the latter carrying the same artwork later shown in the promotional flyer. The images seen in that flyer and other promotional art are computer-generated renderings rather than photographs of a finished, playable game.
Because it never reached production, essentially nothing is confirmed about its actual gameplay, rules, or final art package beyond the unproduced flyer artwork. The Crocodile Hunter Outback Adventure survives today primarily as a notable 'what could have been' in pinball history – a licensed project cut short by real-world tragedy rather than by any flaw in the game itself.
