Slap Shot
About This Machine
Slap Shot is a solid state electronic 'bat game' from Data East Pinball, built around an ice hockey theme. Rather than shooting for standard playfield targets, the object is to shoot balls past a moving goalie – which slides back and forth across the goal mouth – as many times as possible within a fixed time period to score the most points.
The game features six hanging targets adding to the scoring opportunities, a large red LED display, voice effects, and a ticket dispenser, giving it the redemption-style presentation common to bat games of the era. It uses 15 steel balls of 5/8-inch diameter. Notably, early production units of Slap Shot did not include a tilt mechanism at all; later games in the production run added a tilt pendulum.
As one of a relatively small number of pinball-adjacent machines built around ice hockey, Slap Shot offers a glimpse into Data East's experimentation with sports-themed redemption games during the 1980s, and remains a distinctive find for collectors interested in the format.
