Surf Champ
About This Machine
Surf Champ, from Maquinas Recreativas Sociedad Anonima (Maresa) of Madrid, Spain, is a four-player electro-mechanical pinball machine that is a copy of Gottlieb's 1976 'Surf Champ.' A single-player version from the same manufacturer, called 'Surfer,' was also produced. Like other Maresa EM machines of the period, its lower cabinet uses the drop-down front end and large coin door found on Williams games up until 1966.
Gameplay includes two flippers, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, a 5-bank drop target, a kick-out hole, a spinning target, and five star rollovers, all feeding into an end-of-ball bonus tallied across six score reels per player (typically two of which are dummy zeroes). Sound comes from three chimes, characteristic of EM-era machines.
Surf Champ's theme celebrates water sports and surfing culture, carrying over the sun-and-surf aesthetic of its Gottlieb source material into the Spanish market of the era. As a licensed adaptation rather than an original design, it reflects how European manufacturers like Maresa often reproduced successful American titles for regional audiences.
