Metropolis
About This Machine
Metropolis, made by Explomatic of Sevilla, Spain, is an electro-mechanical pinball machine with an outer-space, science-fiction fantasy theme. Little is documented about Explomatic itself beyond the fact that it reportedly took over manufacturing operations from Maresa of Madrid around 1977-78; supporting this, Explomatic's early logo is said to have reused the star motif from Maresa's logo before switching to an orbital design. A near-identical machine, also called 'Metropolis,' was released by Maresa itself.
Gameplay features two flippers, dual in-lanes on the left and right, and a range of scoring elements including two five-bank drop targets, two pop bumpers, two kick-out holes, and three standup targets. This mix of components creates multiple scoring paths typical of late-1970s European electromechanical design.
The outer-space and science-fiction theme was a popular choice for pinball during this period, though specific details about the artwork or designer are not documented. As one of two closely related 'Metropolis' machines tied to the Maresa/Explomatic manufacturing lineage, this game is a useful data point for tracing the relationship between the two Spanish manufacturers.
