About This Machine

The Corvette pinball machine, designed by George Gomez and released by Midway (under the Bally trade name) in August 1994, celebrates one of America's most iconic sports cars. Running on the Williams WPC Security system with a confirmed production run of 5,001 units, Corvette taps into car-culture nostalgia, drawing players in with artwork by Dan Hughes, music and sound by Paul Heitsch, and software by Tom Uban and Bill Grupp.

The game features three flippers and two ramps, along with playful automotive touches: an engine-shaped ball shaker and a Matchbox car racetrack toy on the playfield. Designer George Gomez has recounted that the game began as a widebody design with drop targets and even a 4-speed shifter bolted to the side of the cabinet for shifting gears in the dragstrip mode; these features were removed to meet the bill-of-materials budget, though the supporting code remains in the software. A handful of very early production games were placed at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, with a special NCM welcome message in the code.

Visually, Corvette immerses players in the world of high-performance driving, paying homage to the sleek lines and curves of Chevrolet's classic roadster. As a well-documented design from one of pinball's most respected creators, Corvette remains a notable entry in the mid-1990s Bally/Williams catalog.
