About This Machine

James Cameron's Avatar (Limited Edition), released by Stern Pinball in December 2010, is the enhanced limited-edition version of Stern's standard 2010 'Avatar' machine, with a confirmed production run of 250 units. Designed by John Borg and Lonnie D. Ropp with art by Kevin O'Connor, it capitalizes on the record-breaking popularity of James Cameron's film. It was far from the first movie-licensed pinball — manufacturers had produced film tie-ins for decades — but it stands out for its elaborate, highly mechanized playfield toys.

The LE adds several upgrades over the standard release: an AMP suit with animated marching legs that falls forward when destroyed, a transporter pod with a motor that opens and closes, a shaker motor, and additional character models including a Banshee over the ramp, Colonel Quaritch in his AMP suit, and Na'vi figures over the N-A-V-I target bank. Other gameplay features include two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, 13 standup targets, two spinning targets, a captive ball, a Newton ball, a stop magnet, and a "3-D" translite. A ceramic Na'vi ball awards 2X scoring when in play.

Additional LE-specific touches include a metal bottom arch with backlit translucent blue windows, metal playfield slide rails in place of pegs, a classic-style lock bar, chrome side rails and hinges, and a white powerball with a sensor that boosts scoring when in play. The cabinet is advertised at 55 inches long, 27 inches wide, 75 1/2 inches high, and 250 pounds. The first unit in this run shipped December 2, 2010, making Avatar (LE) a heavily upgraded, collector-oriented edition of one of Stern's most visually ambitious licensed tables.
