Bumper
About This Machine
Bumper, manufactured by T. S. Halpin & Co. Ltd. of Mt. Brydges, Ontario, Canada, is a rare electro-mechanical pinball machine notable for being Flipperless — there are no flippers to control the ball's path. Instead, gameplay relies on 12 spring bumpers scattered across the playfield, with players getting 5 balls for 5 cents.
The machine shares its playfield and lower apron with Bally's 1936 game also called Bumper, though this version adds a tilt meter on the apron. Its backbox and backglass are larger than the Bally original, and unlike the Bally version, its backglass scoring uses light bulbs rather than a projection system. The cabinet side art is not simply painted but uses overlaid wood shapes for a distinctive textured look, and the ball shooter gauge displays the manufacturer's name and address.
As one of the few documented examples from this small Canadian manufacturer, Bumper offers a window into the lesser-known corners of the pre-flipper pinball industry, when spring bumpers alone determined how the ball moved around the playfield.
