All Stars
About This Machine
The All Stars pinball machine, manufactured by A.B.T. Manufacturing Company of Chicago in 1935, is a rare and intriguing example of early electro-mechanical (EM) pinball design. As one of the earliest known football-themed pinball machines, it holds significant importance in the history of the game. The fact that it was produced during the height of the Great Depression makes its existence all the more remarkable.
Gameplay on the All Stars is characterized by a unique setup where players must land a ball in position before the red kick-off man, then shoot a ball into the Touchdown hole at the top of the playfield. This triggers a bell and sends the first ball flying upfield to the goal posts. Balls that fall into either the Touchdown or Out of Bounds holes are returned for free play, adding an element of strategy to the game. The machine's cabinet was advertised as being hand-rubbed maple with inlaid hardwood side panelings, giving it a premium feel.
The All Stars features three-dimensional cast pot-metal football players on its playfield, adding a touch of whimsy and visual interest to the gameplay experience. Unfortunately, little is known about the designer or any notable production runs, leaving this pinball machine as somewhat of an enigma in the world of collectors and historians. Despite this, its unique blend of early EM design and sports theme make it an attractive and fascinating addition to any pinball collection.
