About This Machine

The Royal Crown is a Flipperless rolldown pinball machine produced by the Williams Manufacturing Company, designed by Harry Williams. The manufacturer's original playfield drawing is dated August 30, 1955, indicating the game dates to the mid-1950s; it is also nearly identical to Williams' 1955 game Jolly Joker.

What sets the Royal Crown apart is its manual, flipperless gameplay: for five cents, players get five balls, which they roll by hand down the playfield glass toward the backbox until the balls fall onto the playfield and roll back toward the player. This roll-down mechanic, common to games of this type, rewards a different kind of skill than flipper-based play and reflects a style of pinball that remained popular alongside flipper games through the 1950s.

The Royal Crown's playing-card theme fits the era's fondness for gambling-adjacent imagery in rolldown games. While detailed production and sales figures are not documented, its close kinship to Jolly Joker and its dated playfield drawing give collectors a fairly precise sense of when and by whom it was designed.
