Volley
About This Machine
The Taito do Brasil "Volley" is a solid-state electronic pinball machine that reworks a familiar design under a volleyball theme: it is a copy of Williams' 1978 "World Cup," refitted with sports-themed artwork and released for the Brazilian market by this division of Japan's Taito.
Gameplay follows its source machine's layout: two flippers give players control of the ball, while two pop bumpers add challenge. Eight star rollover targets encourage players to chase multiple scoring opportunities, and the playfield also includes two kick-out holes, two ball kickers, two standup targets, and a spinning target, giving players a varied set of shots to aim for.
Little is documented about Volley's exact production dates or the artists responsible for its volleyball-themed reskin, but as an example of Taito do Brasil adapting an existing Williams design for a new market, it offers an interesting footnote in the story of pinball's international licensing and cloning practices.
