About This Machine

Colors, released to production by Williams on November 5, 1954, is a single-player electro-mechanical game designed by Harry Williams - the company's founder - with artwork by George Molentin built around a swimming and recreation theme featuring women and water scenery. It captures Williams' mid-1950s house style at a time when the company was an established force in flipper games.

The playfield features two impulse flippers, three pop bumpers, four passive bumpers, two slingshots, two gobble holes, two captive balls, and two kickers. Notably, the replay counter has three digits to accommodate the game's Star Feature, which could rack up large numbers of replays.

Colors also carries an intriguing production mystery. Two different schematics exist: an earlier one dated June 1954 (revised through August) with no Star Feature circuitry, and an undated later one that includes it. This strongly suggests that examples of Colors may have been built without the Star Feature, raising the question of whether their backglasses show the three-digit replay counter at all - a detail that keeps researchers and collectors hunting for surviving examples.
