007-Flipper
About This Machine
The 007-Flipper is a rare and enigmatic electro-mechanical pinball machine from VEB Luckenwalder Metallwarenfabrik (trade name Lumet) of Luckenwalde, Germany, reportedly the only manufacturer to produce pinball machines in East Germany. A Billboard article dated March 20, 1961 announced the company's entry into pinball production, though no confirmed manufacture date exists for any specific version of this game.
The machine offers a head-to-head gameplay format where two players face off at opposite ends of the playfield in simultaneous play, each controlling only the flippers facing their opponent. Versions have been found with four or eight flippers and an automatic ball lift; the 4-flipper versions include a movable goalie (the "Torkanone") controlled by a swivel handle, allowing players to block or kick the ball toward their opponent. The cabinet measures 92cm by 50cm by 91cm.
Despite its sports theme, no direct connection to the literary or film "James Bond 007" has been found in any version researched, and the distributor, Autronic Handels GmbH, is documented referring to the game as "007 TORFLIPPER" on its instruction cards. Multiple playfield and cabinet variants exist, some featuring decorative decals unrelated to sports, suggesting the game went through several revisions during its production run. Its unique competitive design and obscure Eastern Bloc origins make it a fascinating curiosity for serious pinball collectors.
