About This Machine

NBA, released by Stern Pinball in 2009, brought officially licensed NBA basketball theming to pinball, running on Stern's S.A.M. Board System. Designed by Gary Stern and Ray Tanzer, with John Borg completing development after Stern's mid-project downsizing shifted the game from a China-only release into full regular production, NBA features art by Kevin O'Connor, dot-matrix animation by Mark Galvez, sound by David Thiel, and software by Lonnie D. Ropp and Lyman F. Sheats Jr. Voice-over artist Tim Kitzrow provided the play-by-play announcer voice.

The game's standout features include a Trajectory up-kicker that sends the ball airborne towards the hoop, and a ramp-on-a-ramp mechanism, added by Borg, that elevates to launch a fast-moving ball toward the goal. Players can trigger 2- and 3-ball multiball, and navigate two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, nine standup targets, a 3-bank drop target, a captive ball, and a spinning disc. A large basketball hemisphere on the playfield glows as a centerpiece toy. Some of the DMD art was reportedly reused from Sega's 1996 'Space Jam'.

The cabinet is advertised at 55 inches long, 27 inches wide, and 75 1/2 inches high, weighing 250 lbs. As one of Stern's licensed sports titles from the late 2000s, NBA reflects the company's continued push into officially branded sports theming during that era.
