College Football
About This Machine
College Football, produced by D. Gottlieb & Company in November 1936, is a single-player electro-mechanical payout machine - a gambling-style pin game from the era before flippers. The playfield contains 28 trap holes, and awards were paid based on where the ball came to rest. Curiously, the backglass does not show the game's name at all; instead it displays the words 'ODDS for SCORE'.
The machine was sold with a range of period options: a mystery single or multiple coin slot, a ticket-dispensing version for $10.00 extra, a check separator at no extra charge, a D.C. Adaptopak for $5.00, and Electropak equipment with batteries optional. It was fitted with the then-new A.B.T. No. 400 coin slot.
College Football was one of a family of Gottlieb payout games sharing the same basic design under different themes: the horserace version was 'Derby Day', the playing-card version was 'High Card', and the baseball version was 'Hit Parade', all from 1936. As a re-themed variant in that series, it offers a window into how manufacturers of the payout era recycled proven mechanisms under multiple dressings to reach different locations.
