Silent Runabout
About This Machine
The Silent Runabout, manufactured by Boyle Amusement Company of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in May 1932, is a pin table from pinball's earliest pure mechanical (PM) era. As a PM machine, it predates electromechanical pinball design and the later introduction of flippers, relying entirely on manual and mechanical interaction.
Little specific information is documented about the Silent Runabout's playfield layout, rules, or notable features. Like other early Boyle Amusement releases, it would have involved manually launching balls onto the playfield, with scoring determined by where the balls came to rest, rather than any electrical or flipper-based controls.
The Silent Runabout is a companion release to Boyle's other 1932 offering, the "Runabout (Improved)," and reflects the broader wave of pin tables produced during pinball's earliest commercial years.
