College Daze
About This Machine
College Daze, produced by D. Gottlieb & Company in August 1949, is a single-player electro-mechanical game with a college football theme, released during the era when flippers were still a fairly new addition to pinball. Designed by Wayne Neyens with artwork by Roy Parker, it carries a charming origin story: Neyens had drawn up the game as 'College Days', but Parker, known for his sense of humor, changed the spelling to 'College Daze' - and the pun stuck.
The playfield features two flippers, two pop bumpers, three passive bumpers, and two kick-out holes. A distinctive touch is the replay display: the total number of earned replays is projected from within the backbox onto the backglass. The sound package consists of two bells, typical of the period.
Gottlieb confirmed production of 2,230 units. As an early flipper-era game from the Neyens/Parker team, College Daze is an appealing example of late-1940s Gottlieb design for collectors of the period.
