Whiffle Board Deluxe
About This Machine
Whiffle Board Deluxe is a design credited to Automatic Industries, Inc. of Youngstown, Ohio, dated July 1931 — though this listing is based entirely on patent drawings, and no confirmed physical examples are known to exist. The design was part of a patent application (originally #528,474, later refiled and granted as #1,938,495 to A.L. Paulin et al. in 1933) covering the Whiffle lineage's evolution, including a redesigned playfield, a supplier-made Monarch coin slide, an improved ball shooter, and a ball-lift knob — but, notably, without the center-shuttle knob featured in earlier Whiffle patents, which had been dropped after early production issues.
As with other games in the Whiffle family, this Pure Mechanical (PM) design would have predated flippers (introduced in 1947), relying on gravity and manual mechanisms to move the ball around the playfield.
Because no surviving example has been confirmed, it's unknown whether the name "Whiffle Board Deluxe" ever actually appeared on a manufactured cabinet, making this listing more a piece of patent history than a documented production game.
