Sportsman (Non-payout)
About This Machine
The O.D. Jennings and Company Sportsman (Non-payout) is a 1935 electro-mechanical (EM) novelty pinball machine with a sports-hunting theme. This particular version has square legs attached to the cabinet's corners, and the example on record originally ran off a battery pack before being converted to line power.
As a non-payout, novelty-only game, the Sportsman offered pure entertainment rather than tangible payouts — players paid 5 cents per game with no reward beyond score. A payout version of this same game was also produced by O.D. Jennings, as was another novelty variant with a backbox called 'The Hunter.'
Produced during O.D. Jennings' long 1932-1938 run, the Sportsman reflects the sports and outdoor themes popular in mid-1930s coin-operated amusements. No designer credit or additional trivia has been documented for this title.
