A Circus
About This Machine
A Circus, manufactured by Ace Novelty Company of Chicago in October 1932, is a Pure Mechanical (PM) conversion kit rather than a complete cabinet game — period advertising touted that "our boards are made to fit any machine, can be installed in 15 minutes," letting operators retrofit existing games with new play fields. It offered 1-cent or 5-cent play, giving operators flexibility in pricing.
As a purely mechanical game, A Circus predates flippers (not introduced until 1947) and any electromechanical scoring; players would have used a plunger and gravity to direct the ball toward scoring targets. It is listed in the Encyclopedia of Pinball as a conversion game, though no source specifies which original game it was designed to convert.
Ace Novelty was a short-lived Chicago manufacturer active only from 1932 to 1933, and little further information about A Circus's design, art, or theme survives, leaving it an obscure entry in the era's crowded conversion-kit market.
