Race Day
About This Machine
Race Day, produced by Renato Montanari Giochi (R.M.G.) of Bologna, Italy, is an electro-mechanical (EM) conversion kit built for Gottlieb's 1967 Italian games Hit-A-Card and Solitaire, replacing their mechanical drop-card backglass with lamp illumination. Its exact year of production is unknown. Interestingly, the backglass displays the name "Race Day" while the playfield itself reads "Day Race."
The gameplay follows an auto racing theme, featuring 2 flippers, 3 pop bumpers, 2 slingshots, and 8 standup targets that together provide a variety of scoring opportunities. The machine's sound design is simple, using bells for game feedback, and its wedge-head backbox houses a Plexiglas backglass typical of the conversion.
As one of several Italian conversion kits built on the Hit-A-Card/Solitaire platform — alongside machines like Electric Road — Race Day offers a window into how Italian manufacturers adapted and re-themed existing Gottlieb hardware for their own market during this period.
