Shrek™
About This Machine
The Shrek pinball machine, designed by Pat Lawlor and released by Stern Pinball in 2008, is a licensed title based on the DreamWorks animated franchise. Interestingly, Stern reportedly built the game using the existing design and layout originally created for Family Guy, re-themed with new artwork, software, and audio for Shrek — a conversion that sound designer Jeff Powell has said took roughly four months to complete, largely due to licensing negotiations for voice work and music, including securing the rights to Smash Mouth's 'All Star' for the game's opening.
The playfield features five flippers, three pop bumpers, a mini-playfield, captive balls, Newton balls, a spinning target, and multiball play, along with a mix of drop and standup targets. The cabinet is a substantial one, measuring 55 inches long, 27 inches wide, and 75 1/2 inches high, and weighing around 250 pounds.
Visually and sonically, the game draws directly from the Shrek film trilogy, with artwork by John Youssi and music and dialogue lifted and adapted from the movies' soundtracks. It carried an MSRP of $5,699 when new.
