About This Machine

Spider-Man, released by Stern Pinball in June 2007, brought the web-slinging Marvel hero to a modern licensed pinball title. Conceived by Steve Ritchie and Lyman F. Sheats Jr., with Ritchie as lead designer, the game runs on Stern's S.A.M. Board System and features artwork by Kevin O'Connor, Mark Galvez, Margaret Hudson, and Marc Schoenberg.

Notable features include Doc Ock's magnet, which simulates a "Fusion Malfunction" by holding the ball in place; Green Goblin hovering on his glider above the Pumpkin Bomb targets; Venom's ramp, which quickly feeds the ball back to the left flipper; and Sandman's whirlwind of targets built around a center-playfield 3-bank motor, described by Ritchie as a tribute to designer Brian Eddy and reminiscent of the mechanism in Attack from Mars. Three motorized toy figures move up and down as part of the game's presentation.

Ritchie has spoken about the challenges of the Green Goblin mechanism, noting that a desired variable-speed motor proved too costly, leading the team to settle on a single-speed "twitching" effect instead. Measuring 55 inches long, 27 inches wide, and 75 1/2 inches high and weighing 250 lbs, the machine originally retailed for $5,799.
