Card King
About This Machine
Card King, produced by Renato Montanari Giochi (R.M.G.) of Bologna, Italy, is an electro-mechanical, single-player Add-A-Ball machine built as a copy of Gottlieb's 1971 game of the same name. The lower playfield identifies R.M.G. as the manufacturer, though the backglass on the documented example has been modified -- likely by an operator -- with the original manufacturer's name still faintly visible beneath the game's title.
Gameplay features two flippers along with a mix of targets: pop bumpers, a pair of 4-bank drop targets, and a single 5-bank drop target, all set beneath a wedge-head backbox. Its playing-cards theme mirrors the Gottlieb original it was based on rather than representing a distinct design of its own.
As one of the relatively few documented R.M.G. machines, Card King is a useful example of the practice, common among some European manufacturers of the era, of building close copies of established American designs for regional distribution.
