Stevo-Ball No. 3
About This Machine
The Stevo-Ball No. 3, produced by A. J. Stephens and Company of Kansas City, Missouri in April 1932, is one of four numbered Stevo-Ball models documented in the Encyclopedia of Pinball Vol 1, spanning three different manufacture dates. Like Nos. 2 and 4, it was classified as a pin table (distinct from the square-circle No. 1).
As a Pure Mechanical (PM) machine, the Stevo-Ball No. 3 predates the flipper by roughly 15 years and would have relied entirely on gravity, plunger action, and fixed scoring pockets rather than any player-controlled paddles. It arrived about a year after Bally's earliest commercial pinball games helped launch the modern coin-operated pinball industry in 1931, making it an early, though not literally the first, entrant into that young market.
Little further documentation survives about the Stevo-Ball No. 3's specific rules, playfield layout, or artwork. It remains a minor but historically interesting artifact from the earliest days of commercial pinball manufacturing in the United States.
