About This Machine

The Stevo-Ball No. 2, manufactured by A. J. Stephens and Company of Kansas City, Missouri in March 1932, is an early Pure Mechanical (PM) pin table from the formative years of coin-operated pinball. The Encyclopedia of Pinball Vol 1 groups the various "Stevo-Ball" machines into four numbered models across three manufacture dates; beyond that, little else distinguishes them in the historical record, except that Model No. 1 was a square-circle machine while Nos. 2 through 4 were pin tables.

As a Pure Mechanical machine, the Stevo-Ball No. 2 would have operated without electricity, using gravity, a plunger, and mechanical scoring pockets rather than any flippers - an innovation still about 15 years away from being introduced to pinball. Players launched the ball and then relied on the tilt and layout of the cabinet, rather than active ball control, to influence where it landed.

Specific details of its playfield design, theme, and artwork are not well documented. Still, as an early product of the fledgling pinball industry during the Depression era, the Stevo-Ball No. 2 offers a glimpse into the game's earliest commercial roots before electromechanical, and later flipper-based, designs took over.
