Soccer Kick-Off
About This Machine
Soccer Kick-Off, designed by Harry Williams with artwork by George Molentin, is a 1958 electro-mechanical pinball machine built for a single player. It's a soccer-themed export version of Williams' domestic 1958 title 'Kick-Off,' sharing an identical playfield but with a redesigned backglass depicting two soccer players and a different goalpost — likely intended to appeal to international markets where soccer, rather than American football, was the dominant sport. Notably, the backglass still features cheerleaders left over from the American original, probably retained simply to save the cost of redesigning that section of the art.
Gameplay uses two flippers, three pop bumpers, four passive bumpers, two slingshots, three gobble holes, and two standup targets, with playfield lighting simulating a soccer ball advancing toward the goalposts as players score.
As a regional variant of an existing design rather than a wholly new game, Soccer Kick-Off is most notable today as a snapshot of how manufacturers adapted machines for export markets by re-theming familiar hardware for local sporting tastes.
