Circus
About This Machine
The Circus pinball machine, manufactured by Zaccaria of Bologna, Italy in April 1977, is an intriguing example of late electro-mechanical (EM) pinball design from one of Europe's most notable pinball makers. This four-player game arrived near the end of the EM era, just as the industry was shifting to solid-state electronics, and it offers a snapshot of a well-refined mechanical formula. The Circus boasts an array of classic EM features, including two flippers, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, five standup targets, two spinning targets, and a kick-out hole, providing players with a challenging and engaging experience.
One of the standout aspects of the Circus is its end-of-ball bonus feature, which rewards players for building up scoring during each ball. The machine also plays a distinctive "biri-biri" sound when a player reaches 400,000 points - a fixed threshold that is not adjustable - adding to the game's audio character. The game's design and art take inspiration from a classic circus/carnival theme, with backglass and playfield artwork by Lorenzo Rimondini; the designer is not documented.
As an example of Zaccaria's 1970s output, the Circus provides an opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to experience Italian EM pinball firsthand. Its combination of mechanical gameplay and playful theme makes it an appealing addition to a pinball collection.
