About This Machine

Neptune, manufactured in Italy by Giuliano Lodola of Avenza, Massa-Carrara, Tuscany, in 1979, is an Italian-made modification of Gottlieb's 1978 electro-mechanical game of the same name, with artwork by Michele "Mike" Martinelli. It has been seen with two scoring variations, using six or seven score reels (rather than Gottlieb's five), with black numbers on a white background instead of Gottlieb's style. Unlike the Gottlieb original, the woman depicted on the backglass and playfield is shown nude.

As a single-player, add-a-ball machine, gameplay features two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, two standup targets, two kick-out holes, and an upper left kickback lane, plus the distinctive "biri-biri" feature. The backglass on the known example bears a 1978 date while the playfield is dated 1979, leading IPDB to record 1979 as the manufacture year.

With its mythology theme rooted in the sea god Neptune, this game is part of a wider pattern of Gottlieb designs reworked and distributed in Italy under local branding, offering pinball historians insight into how popular American designs were adapted and re-released for European markets.
