Vulcan IV
About This Machine
Vulcan IV, released in 1982 by Rowamet Indústria Eletrometalúrgica LTDA of São Paulo, Brazil, is a solid-state copy of Gottlieb's 1977 electro-mechanical game 'Vulcan.' The main difference is its backglass, which depicts a woman rather than Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, despite the game's mythology theme.
Notable features include two flippers, two pop bumpers, a 5-bank of drop targets, a 4-bank of drop targets, and a kick-out hole. The presence of the kick-out hole adds an element of risk versus reward to gameplay, consistent with its Gottlieb source material adapted for solid-state electronics.
No specific designer is credited for Vulcan IV. As a Brazilian-market reworking of an established American EM title, it offers a glimpse into how manufacturers outside the US adapted popular designs for their local markets during the early 1980s, and remains a notable piece of pinball history for collectors interested in the international reach of pinball manufacturing.
