Horror
About This Machine
Horror is a conversion kit produced by Pinball Shop of Bologna, Italy, designed to transform Zaccaria's 1980 solid-state machine 'Space Shuttle' into a new game. The kit consists of a new playfield, backglass, and metal side panels, along with a replacement EPROM, while reusing Space Shuttle's original electronics and sounds.
The backglass artwork features characters from the 1984 film 'Dune,' which places the kit's likely manufacture date at 1985 or later. Gameplay for the four-player machine keeps Space Shuttle's underlying layout, featuring two flippers, two pop bumpers, two kick-out holes, and a mix of drop-target banks (a 4-bank, a 2-bank, and a single target) that reward precise shooting.
As an unlicensed conversion rather than a wholly original design, Horror is a curious example of the small-scale kit conversions that circulated in Italy's pinball scene during the mid-1980s, repurposing existing hardware with new art and theming rather than building a machine from scratch.
