About This Machine

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes is a 1979 solid state electronic pinball machine that is a backglass conversion of Bally's 1979 'Star Trek,' as indicated by matching Player-Up numbers. According to a 1979 German music magazine, "Top-Biz," a New Jersey pinball manufacturer sought a music star willing to be pictured on a machine and found one in R&B singer Southside Johnny (John Lyon), who had teamed up with The Asbury Jukes - known as "The World's Greatest Bar Band" - and still performs today. The article predicted the machine would be a top-seller and that future conversions might feature stars like Rod Stewart and Eddie Money.

Gameplay carries over from the underlying Star Trek machine: two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, five standup targets, a 4-bank drop target, a kick-out hole, and a free ball return lane.

Other known examples show the full name "Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes" on the backglass alongside an otherwise unchanged Star Trek playfield and cabinet, suggesting the conversion only replaced the backglass artwork. This rarity, and its unusual crossover between music promotion and pinball, make it an intriguing curiosity for collectors.
