About This Machine

Jungle Queen, produced in 1985 by the Pinball Shop of Bologna, Italy (reportedly made by Sig. Baldazzi for French manufacturer Jacques Martina), is a conversion kit rather than an original machine: it includes a new backglass, playfield, and metal cabinet/backbox cladding built to update an existing Gottlieb System 1 game. Its playfield is a direct copy of Gottlieb's 1977 'Jungle Queen', while its Adventure-themed backglass artwork depicts actors Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner from the 1984 film 'Romancing the Stone'. The artwork is credited to artist Michele "Mike" Martinelli, whose signature and the year 1985 appear on the playfield.

Gameplay-wise, the kit retains the underlying Gottlieb layout, featuring four flippers, three pop bumpers, two banks of five drop targets, and two kick-out holes -- a configuration that offers a challenging, target-heavy playing experience typical of late-1970s Gottlieb System 1 machines repackaged for a new audience.

As a conversion kit built around movie-licensed artwork rather than a wholly new design, Jungle Queen is a notable example of the secondary conversion-kit market that let operators refresh older hardware with new licensed themes. It remains a lesser-documented but historically interesting piece for collectors interested in the European conversion-kit scene of the 1980s.
