Roto-Ball
About This Machine
The Roto-Ball is a rare and intriguing example of early pinball machines from the pre-electronic era. As a Pure Mechanical (PM) pinball machine produced by Roto Manufacturing of Utica, New York, it represents an interesting artifact from the evolution of the game. The machine's exact production date remains unknown, but its existence highlights the innovative spirit and experimentation that characterized the early days of pinball.
Key gameplay features of the Roto-Ball include a mechanism offering 10 balls for five cents, with an "Odd Ball Counts Double" scoring rule per its label. Players can also encounter 22 "gobble holes" -- openings scattered around the playfield -- alongside twelve separate scoring slots at the bottom of the playfield, whose labeled point values range from 50 up to 500, plus a free play slot.
The Roto-Ball's design is characterized by a utilitarian simplicity that reflects its mechanical nature. While its label is very faded, it still proudly displays the manufacturer's name and location, alongside basic instructions for operation: insert a coin, then push the plunger in and pull it out to release the balls, pulling the plunger back and releasing it to shoot. The cabinet, fitted with a long-handled wooden coin tray retrievable from the rear, measures 37 inches long, 18 inches wide, 35 inches high in front, and 37 inches high in back. As one of the few remaining examples from this era, the Roto-Ball offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of pinball history, making it an interesting find for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
