About This Machine

Ripley, released by Stern Pinball in March 2004, is based on the 'Ripley's Believe It or Not!' brand rather than the Alien film franchise, despite sharing a name with the Alien character. Designed by Pat Lawlor and Louis Koziarz, with art by John Youssi, the game invites players to explore a world of strange and amazing facts, all under the watchful gaze of a shrunken head mounted above the playfield.

Key gameplay features include three flippers, six pop bumpers, two slingshots, and a variety of standup and spinning targets, along with two ramp diverters and two magnets. One magnet is positioned beneath the shrunken head, catching the ball briefly before either firing it toward the rear of the playfield or, in another mode, releasing it back to the lower playfield; the second magnet is used in the game's Idol feature. The 'Believe It or Not' rule set is built with multiple tiers, letting newer players achieve some goals quickly while giving skilled players room to extend their sessions. The game also supports 2-, 3-, and 4-ball multiball.

Ripley's cabinet is advertised at 55 inches long, 27 inches wide, and 75 1/2 inches high, weighing roughly 260 pounds (258 pounds as measured with legs installed). Games exported to the UK received three factory-installed 'skill posts' on the playfield, along with extra buttons beneath each flipper button to temporarily raise the outlane and center posts — a feature added to satisfy UK gaming regulations distinguishing games of skill from games of chance. Many operators reportedly disabled this feature for location play once the games cleared customs.
