The Lord of the Rings
About This Machine
The Lord of the Rings pinball machine, released by Stern Pinball in December 2003, marks a significant milestone in the history of electronic pinball. It was the first game specifically developed to use Stern's "interim" Whitestar MPU board system, which introduced a new 16-bit sound system that set a new standard for audio capabilities in pinball machines of its time.
At the heart of The Lord of the Rings lies gameplay that immerses players in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic. Designed by George Gomez, Keith P. Johnson, and Chris Granner, the game features a moving Balrog toy with a built-in flashlamp that blocks the center ramp at times, a tower that "collapses" on certain scoring features, and a mini-playfield designed to encourage nudging. The cabinet, backbox, and backglass art were created by Jerry Vanderstelt, while Kevin O'Connor and Margaret Hudson handled the playfield and plastics art.
The Lord of the Rings is notable for its dedication to representing Tolkien's world through its toys, dot-matrix animations (by Mark Galvez and Kurt Andersen), and music and sound (by Chris Granner). Stern later released an optional Balrog LED lighting update, which was eventually built into later production runs. With an estimated 5,100 units produced — including an initial run of roughly 4,017 machines and several smaller subsequent runs — The Lord of the Rings remains a prized machine among pinball enthusiasts for its ambitious toys and faithful adaptation of a beloved fantasy series.
