About This Machine

Cape May, released by Bally in 1956, is a one-player electro-mechanical bingo pinball machine, produced as a conversion of Bally's 1955 'Broadway', with the Spot 2-18 feature replaced by a Select-A-Number feature. It's part of Bally's extensive line of bingo-style pinball machines from the 1950s, a hugely popular category of coin-operated amusement in that era.

As a bingo machine, Cape May's gameplay centers on lining up numbers on a bingo-style card as balls are played, rather than the flipper-based shot-making found in later "regular" pinball machines. Bally's bingo machines of this period saw constant incremental variation — many, like Cape May, were built as conversions of earlier titles with reworked scoring features and new backglasses, allowing operators to refresh existing hardware inexpensively.

Specific details about Cape May's art and designer have not been documented, which is typical for many of Bally's numerous bingo conversions from the mid-1950s. Nonetheless, it stands as a representative example of the bingo pinball category that dominated much of Bally's output during this period.
