Miss California
About This Machine
Miss California, manufactured by Bally in 1952 and designed by Don Hooker, is an electromechanical (EM) bingo pinball machine -- a genre built around multi-hole scoring rather than the flipper-based gameplay of later pinball. It is a variant of Bally's 'Atlantic City,' produced with a different backglass and with the Extra Ball feature removed, a change made specifically to comply with regulations in parts of California where awarding an extra ball was not permitted.
As a bingo machine, Miss California's gameplay centered on positioning skill and scoring combinations across a grid of holes rather than active ball control with flippers, in keeping with the format Bally popularized throughout the 1950s. Its stripped-down feature set, minus the extra-ball award, reflects how manufacturers adapted individual releases to satisfy local gambling and amusement regulations.
Little further documentation about Miss California has surfaced, but its status as a regionally modified variant of Atlantic City makes it a notable case study in how mid-century pinball manufacturers navigated a patchwork of state and local laws.
