Verspiel Dein Wasser nicht!
About This Machine
Verspiel Dein Wasser nicht! ("Don't Gamble Away Your Water") is a rare and unusual re-themed pinball machine from 1984, built on the electronics and playfield layout of Bally's 1978 'Strikes and Spares' (using a Bally MPU AS-2518-17). It was a promotional project rather than a commercial release: only three units were made, co-produced by Bally Wulff and Berlin's MALBUCH art studio on behalf of an advertising agency and West Germany's Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt).
The machine's environmental theme urged players toward eco-friendly behavior, with playfield text encouraging showers over baths and other water-conservation messages, fitting a four-player, solid-state game. Artists Mychael Gerstenberger and Ralf Kröling completed the custom artwork in 1984, which MALBUCH printed and fitted into machines supplied by Bally to Bally Wulff Berlin, with the backglass produced by Bally Wulff itself.
Rather than appearing on location, the three machines toured schools and educational fairs across West Germany for years as an ecology-awareness exhibit; Gerstenberger recalled making small repairs to one as late as 1987. Its status as a repurposed advertising piece, rather than a standard production title, makes it a genuinely unusual footnote in pinball history.
