About This Machine

The DeLuxe Register, produced by D. Gottlieb & Company in May 1938, is an early example of electro-mechanical pinball, part of the Novelty Play category. This machine's inclusion in the Gottlieb catalog reflects the company's early growth as an amusement equipment manufacturer. Note that, despite the name used to catalog this machine, the words "De Luxe" do not appear to be printed on the game itself, and it is closely related to Gottlieb's other 1938 release, 'Register.'

Gameplay on the DeLuxe Register features 13 spring bumpers, which would have provided a challenging and unpredictable experience for players, and the game used a dial recorder to keep score, a mechanical device that rotates to display scores. The machine's five-ball play added complexity compared to some earlier novelty designs, and it ran on AC current, priced at $49.50 when new.

The DeLuxe Register was compact, measuring 44 inches in length and 22 inches in width, with an 8-inch-high, 22-inch-wide backboard. There is no information available on the machine's theme or designer, and the known surviving example lacks its original backglass and has been repainted.
