Shark
About This Machine
Taito do Brasil's 1982 pinball Shark is a solid state electronic game with a nautical theme, notable for being — according to a Brazilian pinball club — the only game from this manufacturer with an original playfield design, rather than a copy of another company's game.
Shark's feature set includes two flippers, a single pop bumper, and three slingshots, along with five star rollover targets and a mix of drop targets: a 5-bank, a 3-bank, and a 3-in-line configuration. The machine's multiball mode is a highlight, allowing up to three balls on the playfield at once, and a captive ball walker and ball kicker lane add further mechanical variety. A spinning target rounds out the challenge.
The Shark's oceanic, nautical-themed artwork and design help it stand out among Taito do Brasil's catalog. Little is documented about the machine's designer or development process, and it was also produced under Fipermatic's branding as their own 'Shark,' making it an interesting subject for collectors tracing the relationships between Brazil's various pinball manufacturers.
