About This Machine

Volcano is a Solid State Electronic (SS) pinball machine from Fipermatic Indústria Comércio Importação e Exportação Ltda of Manaus, Brazil. Its exact release year is unknown, and it was previously misattributed to Taito do Brasil before IPDB researchers confirmed the Fipermatic logo on its backglass. It shares its basic design with Gottlieb's 1981 'Volcano,' though without that game's double backglass.

Gameplay on Volcano centers on a prehistoric, geological theme (Cavemen - Dinosaurs - Volcanoes), with three flippers, four pop bumpers, and a series of challenging targets. The machine features two five-bank drop targets, two kick-out holes, and a single kick target, along with a right-inlane ball detour gate that allows for dynamic gameplay. An open-elbow design on the upper right playfield lets balls pass from inlane to outlane and vice versa, and a left outlane kickback adds further strategy. A 4-hole skee-ball feature sits in the upper right playfield, while a shooter lane with a moving guide varies the direction of the propelled ball.

The Cavemen-Dinosaurs-Volcanoes theme sets Volcano apart from many contemporaries. As one of a small number of documented Fipermatic-made pinball machines, it offers an interesting glimpse into Brazil's regional pinball manufacturing, though questions remain — including whether the game features multiball or speech.
