Meteor
About This Machine
The Meteor is a Brazilian-manufactured version of Stern's 1979 'Meteor,' produced by Taito do Brasil under license from Stern - a fact noted directly on the playfield apron. According to a Brazilian pinball club, Meteor is the only game in Taito do Brasil's catalog that openly acknowledges being licensed, which makes it a particularly interesting case study in how American pinball designs made their way into the South American market.
Gameplay on the Meteor largely mirrors Stern's original, with several distinctive features intact: three flippers allow for dynamic play, while a single pop bumper and two passive bumpers provide additional challenge. Two slingshots, three separate 3-bank drop targets, one 6-bank drop target, and a spinning target add variety, and the game uses "memory" drop targets that track which targets have already been hit.
The Meteor's outer space theme is visually striking, transporting players to a cosmic realm of asteroid fields. As a licensed, Brazilian-built counterpart to a well-known Stern machine, the Meteor offers collectors a rare look at how international licensing worked in the pinball industry of this era.
