Sindbad
About This Machine
Sindbad is an electro-mechanical pinball machine produced by Renov' Automatic - Jolux (trading as J. Martina) of Marcoussis and Paris, France, sometime during the company's 1968–1984 run; its exact year of manufacture is not documented. The game is a conversion of Gottlieb's 1964 'Ship-Mates,' repurposed with a new fantasy theme centered on Sindbad the Sailor, the legendary hero of the classic Arabic folk tales collected in The Thousand and One Nights (The Arabian Nights).
Sindbad features gameplay typical of the electro-mechanical era, including two flippers, four pop bumpers, two kick-out holes, and a roto-target, set against a mythology-and-legend playfield theme. As with many EM conversions of the period, achieving high scores requires familiarity with the machine's mechanical quirks and target placement.
Little is documented about the specific designer or artist behind this French conversion, but as a European reworking of a well-regarded American Gottlieb title, Sindbad offers an interesting look at how manufacturers outside the U.S. adapted existing designs for their own markets.
