About This Machine

Sea Breeze, manufactured by the North Star Coin Machine Company of Montreal, Canada in 1949, is one of only two pinball machines produced by this short-lived Canadian company. Like its sibling game Richelieu, Sea Breeze was designed by Jacques Tremblay with art by Louis Léger, and was created in response to a 1947–1951 ban on importing foreign pinball machines into Canada, which opened the door for domestic manufacturers.

Although built using rebuilt bodies from older pinball machines, Sea Breeze featured a brand-new playfield and all the modern electromechanical features of the era, making it effectively a new game despite its recycled cabinet. Its backglass measures 22 by 20 inches, notably large for a game of its size and period.

North Star was run by brothers Gerard and Jacques Tremblay, and Sea Breeze, together with Richelieu, represents the company's entire known output. Rather than becoming a major industry player, North Star's brief run makes Sea Breeze a rare and fascinating glimpse into a small, wartime-restriction-driven chapter of Canadian pinball manufacturing.
