Topaz
About This Machine
Topaz, manufactured by Industria (Electromecánica) de Recreativos S.A. (INDER) of Madrid, Spain in 1979, is a solid-state electronic (SS) pinball machine featuring an outer space and fantasy theme centered on female imagery. Its gameplay is identical to INDER's own 1976 title 'Keops,' repackaged here with new artwork and a new theme.
Gameplay-wise, Topaz includes two flippers, two pop bumpers, a slingshot, two spinning targets, and dual right-flipper inlanes for up to four players. These elements combine to create a dynamic if familiar experience, carried over directly from Keops.
The design and art on Topaz are notable for their bold use of color and futuristic, fantastical imagery, distinguishing it visually from its Keops predecessor even though the underlying game is unchanged. Little is known about the specific designer behind the artwork, but as a re-themed variant of an earlier INDER title, Topaz illustrates a common cost-saving practice among manufacturers of reusing proven playfields with new cabinet and backglass artwork.
