South Park
About This Machine
South Park, released by Sega Pinball in February 1999, brings the irreverent humor of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's adult animated series to a six-player solid-state pinball machine. Conceived by Joe Kaminkow, with design by Joe Balcer and Kaminkow and artwork by Jason Dominiak and Dave Link, the game embraces the show's juvenile, cartoon-licensed theme.
Gameplay features two flippers, three pop bumpers, and two slingshots, along with figurines of the show's characters and a playfield toilet that "flushes" balls during multiball play. A hidden feature lets players view the personnel credits on the DMD by pressing the flipper buttons in a specific sequence (2x left, 2x right, 2x left, 2x right) during attract mode.
Because of its mature content, operators could select from three content modes — 'G', 'TV-14', or 'TV-MA' — to tailor the game's material to different locations, and the package included a decal operators could use to cover playfield artwork deemed objectionable for family settings. Approximately 2,200 units were produced in the initial run, with additional smaller production runs reported afterward, making South Park a notable and commercially significant licensed cartoon title of the late 1990s.
