About This Machine

Richie Rich, dated July 1994 from Data East Pinball, is not a conventional release but a one-of-a-kind movie prop. Only a single unit was ever built, reusing the same playfield layout as Data East's 'Tommy,' with the playfield art and plastics art painted directly onto the surfaces rather than manufactured in the usual way.

Its ruleset was correspondingly minimal, limited to a multiball mode and the Tommy ramp rule carried over from the donor game. Credited names include Joe Kaminkow, Ed Cebula, Lonnie D. Ropp, and Lyman F. Sheats Jr., with art by Markus Rothkranz and sound by Brian Schmidt.

As a hand-built prop rather than a production pinball machine, Richie Rich is less a showcase of Data East's commercial output and more a curiosity — a rare glimpse of how a licensed playfield could be repurposed quickly for a film production.
